Life just got bigger

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth (over 2000km long)

  1. How many species are affected by this? How many are dependent on it?

  2. Its hard to say dependent, because some species would continue to survive without the reef. But as far as a rough number living on the reef, depending what you count I would say between 6,000 and 10,000 species. If you are counting just fish, coral, shellfish and mammals/birds it would be more towards the lower number, but if algea and plankton species are counted it would likely be near the higher number
